How to Choose the Best NIJ Certified Armor for Your Needs

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice that sets standards for body armor used by law enforcement and military personnel. As such, it’s important to know how to choose the best armor for your specific needs. This blog post will help you understand the different levels of NIJ certified armor and which level is right for you.

Level IIA vs Level II vs Level IIIa vs Level III+

The first thing to consider when choosing body armor is what level of protection it offers. At NIJ-certified body armor can be found in four ratings: Level IIA, Level II, Level IIIa, and Level III+. Here’s a description of each level so you can decide which one best suits your needs:

Level IIA – This is the lowest level of protection offered by NIJ-certified body armor, but it still offers good protection against most handgun rounds up to .40 caliber. It’s a good option if you don’t need the highest level of protection but still want something reliable and lightweight.

Level II – This is a step up from Level IIA, offering increased protection against handgun rounds up to .357 magnum caliber. It’s a great choice if you need more protection than what’s offered at Level IIA but still want something lightweight and comfortable.

Level IIIA – This is the highest level of ballistic protection offered by soft body armor and provides excellent protection against most handgun rounds up to .44 magnum caliber. It’s also relatively lightweight compared to other types of body armor, making it perfect for those who need maximum protection without all the bulkiness associated with heavier bulletproof vests.

Level III+ – This is an advanced version of Level IIIa that offers even greater protection against higher caliber rounds such as .223 rifle ammunition and 7.62mm NATO rounds. It does add some weight compared to other levels, so it may not be ideal for those who need maximum flexibility or mobility in their bulletproof vest.

Choosing the right NIJ-certified body armor is an important decision that should be made carefully based on your specific needs and requirements. Be sure to consider all factors before deciding which type of bulletproof vest is right for you. Whether you choose a lightweight option like Level IIA or go all out with a heavy-duty option like Level III+, there are many options available so you can find the perfect solution for your unique situation.
